Tomorrow's Talent 2025: Maiya Dambawinna

Event Coordinator Maiya Dambawinna has already made her mark on the events industry, bringing confidence, creativity and an unapologetic authenticity to everything she does. As one of this year’s Tomorrow’s Talent winners, Maiya shares what drives her, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and her advice for others just getting started.

What do you love most about working in events?

The energy and the community. I never expected that coming into the industry at 22, I’d feel this confident just two years later – or that I’d have built such a strong network beyond my immediate workplace. The industry is so supportive and welcoming, and I think that’s what makes it truly special.

What barriers have you faced entering the industry, and how did you overcome them?

As a biracial Northern woman, I knew I might face challenges based on my appearance, accent, name, or background. But I was fortunate to start my career in a diverse, female-led workplace. I was also clear from the outset about how important diversity and inclusion are to me, and that honesty helped guide me to the right environment. Being unapologetically myself has been key to my growth – personally and professionally.

Any habits or tips that have helped your professional development?

Having an ear open at all times. I’ve learned so much simply by listening, sitting in on meetings, observing conversations, and staying curious. It’s easy to get buried in your own workload, but looking outward, keeping up with industry trends, learning from colleagues, and spotting new ideas makes you a more creative and well-rounded professional.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Learn your boundaries, and don’t be afraid to say no! Our industry is fast-paced and full of opportunities, but balance is essential. Sometimes, an admin day is just as valuable as being on-site. A few hours at a networking event can be more productive than a whole day in your inbox. Knowing what works for you helps you show up as your best self.

What’s your dream event to work on?
Cannes Film Festival or Paris Fashion Week.

What have you learned about yourself since starting in the industry?
I didn’t realise how confident I could be under pressure. At first, I’d get overwhelmed by tight deadlines or unexpected changes, especially when I was the main client contact. But over time, I’ve learned to trust myself – I usually know what to do, I just need a moment of calm to access it.

If your event had a movie theme, what would it be?
Any Studio Ghibli film!
